Wilhelm is a contestant in the Invitation Chess Championship representing the Duchy of Prussia.

History[]

The Tournament[]

In 1546, the leadership in the new Protestant Duchy of Prussia received a letter from Sultan Suleiman of the Ottoman Empire to announce that he was going to be holding a chess tournament, and requested that they send their best player to Constantinople to determine the champion of the known world. Wilhelm of Königsberg's chess skills were soon determined to be the best in Prussia, and so he was sent off with a delegation to Constantinople.

Wilhelm and his delegation were present during the opening banquet, and Bess noted his youthfulness as he was introduced.

At the drawing for the tournament the following day, Wilhelm's name was selected for the eighth matchup, in which he would be facing the peasant champion of Constantinople, Ibrahim.

Prior to his match, Wilhelm was approached by Sultan Suleiman's men, who coerced him into throwing his match by threatening the lves of his companions, so that a subject of the Ottoman Empire would be able to progress to the final. Thus when Wilhelm had his match against Ibrahim, Wilhelm intentionally lost the majority of the seven matches against his opponent, and was thus eliminated from the Championship.
