Early History[]

A long time ago, a race of super-ancient beings built the first of the iron mountains for their Trial of the Mountains within what would later become a tidal island in Normandy, France (the exact geological status of the area at the time is unclear).

After the Super-Ancients were gone, the Four Legendary Kingdoms learned about the tasks left behind by the Super-Ancient Beings, among them the Trial of the Mountains, and through the use of a bronze-like globe, the first mountain was eventually discovered on the tidal island of Mont Saint-Michel.

Over the centuries, the Catholic Church maintained control of a commune on the Mont, and built a shrine dedicated to the archangel Michael atop it to help conceal the mountain from the rest of the world. During the Hundred Years Way, the English attempted to invade the Mont by building a tunnel leading to it from the nearby Tombelaine island, only for their two thousand men to drown when the tunnel flooded.

In the 1800s, Napoléon Bonaparte used the near-impregnable fortress of Mont Saint-Michel as a prison.

The Two Lost Mountains[]

After Hardin "Sphinx" Lancaster successfully completed the Trial of the Cities at the Altar of the Cosmos, Cardinal Ricardo Mendoza reported that Felix Rasmussen was at Mont Saint-Michel and working to ensure that the first iron mountain would be ready for the Trismagi's arrival when the alignment event with the moon's pedestal began.

Over the next few weeks, Rasmussen and his subordinates, including an irked Bertie de Montreuil, continued preparations at Mont Saint-Michel, and after Sphinx and his forces obtained the Siren bells, he sent Mendoza and Dion DeSaxe ahead to Mont Saint-Michel to finish the preparations before his arrival.

At the same time, Jack West Jr and his team discussed the locations of the iron mountains, with Hades and Iolanthe Compton-Jones revealing the location of the first within Mont Saint-Michel. When Iolanthe got in contact with Bertie to discuss where the other mountains where, the old Jesuit revealed Sphinx's impending arrival to the Mont and suggested that the meet him there. With that, Jack, Iolanthe, Hades and Nobody began making their way to the first mountain in the hopes of stopping Sphinx and performing the Fall themselves.

Using the old tunnel leading from Tombelaine, Jack and Iolanthe met with Bertie and were led to a viewing balcony within the abbey that overlooked the Falling Temple. Soon Sphinx himself arrived at Mont Saint-Michel with members of his entourage and several bronzemen and silvermen, with the Trismagi announcing his intention to undertake the Fall by himself.

As Sphinx took his place atop the Falling Temple, Hades, having overheard Bertie mention his son being present at the Mont, made his way through the tunnel and into the knave, unknowingly triggering a laser tripwire that Bertie had helped Jack and Iolanthe avoid. As Dion received a message from his father asking to meet in the knave above, the lunar alignment began and Sphinx initiated the Falling Temple's drop into the shaft. Upon completing his race from the upper altar to the lowest level, Sphinx received the burning key to allow him entrance into the Supreme Labyrinth.

While the Falling Temple was raised back to the surface, Dion confronted Hades and refuted his father's attempt to reconcile, instead having the Knights of the Golden Eight capture him and bring the former King of Underworld before Sphinx, just as the Trismagi ordered that execution of Rasmussen and the other priests. After taunting Hades briefly, Jack and Iolanthe watched helplessly as Sphinx had a silverman decapitate Hades and throw his body into the shaft. Deducing that Jack must also be present, Sphinx called out the Australian and scoffed as his ideals while explaining his plan for world rule.

As Sphinx departed and his forces began attacking, Jack swung over to the Falling Temple and recovered Bertie as the automatons killed Rasmussen and the priests, and then destroyed one of the winching chains holding the Falling Temple up. As the Temple fell and crashed into the shaft, Jack, Iolanthe and Bertie rushed to make their escape to the undersea tunnel and fled Mont Saint-Michel.

The One Impossible Labyrinth[]

After the Omega Event was averted, the world learned of the ancient trials, leading archaeologists and historians to head to the ancient sites such as the first iron mountain beneath Mont Saint Michel to study them. Though it became a popular tourist destination as a result, Mont Saint-Michel's iron mountain was recognised by the world being as crucial and in need of preservation so that it could be used for future runs of the trials and Omega Events.
