Luc Champion is a French scientist from the d'Urville ice station.

History[]

Early History[]

Luc and his cousin Veronique often spent time together as children.

When he entered adulthood, Luc became a surgeon, and by 1999, he had come to be stationed at the Dumont d'Urville research station in Antarctica, working there on rotating schedules. On at least one occasion, Champion met some of the scientists from the neighbouring American station, Wilkes, such as Sarah Hensleigh.

One day, d'Urville intercepted a distress call from Wilkes claiming that a diving team had disappeared after finding an alien ship beneath the ice. Soon after, the French decided to send Luc and Henri Rae along with a team of paratroopers to secure the station and the spacecraft for the French, with Champion and Rae's presence intended to sell the illusion of the paratroopers posing as scientists from d'Urville since the pair were personally known to the Wilkes staff.

Ice Station[]

At first, the American scientists believed him and the paratroopers posing as scientists to have come in response to the distress call in order to help. Soon though, shortly after some of the paratroopers took half of the American scientists away to be executed, Champion went to answer a knock on the front door, and was surprised to himself confronted by a team of U.S. Marines who had come in response to the distress call. Their leader, Lieutenant Shane Schofield, inquired if Champion was American and what his name was, so Champion clarified that he was French before introducing himself. To avoid suspicion, Champion led the Marines to the common room where everyone else was gathered, and assured the American scientists that the Marines were there to help them.

Schofield grew increasingly suspicious of Champion and the rest of the French, and eventually the ruse was uncovered, and a firefight broke out in the station, with Champion passing a concealed sub-machine gun he'd been carrying to "Jean Petard". Champion and Rae hid during the battle, however, the Marines defeated the paratroopers, and when the pair were found, they were handcuffed to a pole on E-deck.

Some time later, Rebound was ordered to get Champion to help the injured Samurai, as Hensleigh had informed Schofield that the Frenchman was a surgeon. Since they couldn't be sure to trust Champion entirely, Schofield told Rebound to threaten the surgeon that he would die if Samurai did. However, by the time Champion had been collected and brought to Samurai, the young Marine had already died. Champion examined the body and found traces of lactic acid in Samurai's esophagus, meaning that he had not died from his wounds, but rather he had been suffocated. Champion explained his findings to the Lieutenant before he was returned to E-deck.

When British SAS troops began to head for Wilkes, Schofield decided to abandon Wilkes, but left Champion, Rae and the ICG traitor Snake behind. When Trevor Barnaby and the SAS arrived, Luc demanded that he be released, beginning to cite international rights, only to abruptly be shot in the head by Nero.

After Death[]

Years later, after becoming an assassin for the DGSE, Veronique, having mistakenly come to believe that Schofield had killed Luc himself, requested permission from her superiors to take on the assignment when the Marine was given a kill-warrant. However, when she caught up to him, she learned the truth about how Barnaby had had her cousin killed, and eventually opted to allow Schofield to live. (Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves)
