The Italian Run is a professional hover car race and the third of the Grand Slam Races.
History[]
Early History[]
During the growth of the hover car industry, and the accompanying racing sports, the professional league established the Masters Series of races. Chief among them were the "four" Grand Slam races, which included the Italian Run. The nation-spanning race would begin in Rome, run through the northern mountains before turning back south and running along the coastlines until Venice and turned to end at Venice II.
Over several years, the Italian Run was successful in drawing race fans to Italy, with the tourism providing a boost to the local economy. The track was notable for the shortcut built into the Taranto mines, which in theory could allow a racer to catch up four minutes on the rest of the field, but not once did a racer enter the mine and successfully emerge at the other end.
Scott Syracuse did, however, did drive into the mine during the middle of a race with the intention of mapping the interior of the mine so that he could use it in future races. Most people would assume that he had entered the mines in desperation since he did not emerge from back at the entrance several hours later. Unfortunately, Syracuse was wiped out during a race later that same year, and due to the extensive injuries he received he would never be able to race again, thus keeping him from being able to use the shortcut himself.
