The Gold Colossus is a giant statue resembling a goldman which contains the consciousness of the Super-Ancient Beings that created the universe.
History[]
Early History[]
Evidently hailing from a different universe, a race of sentient beings possessing highly advanced technology created the universe containing Earth around 14 billion years ago. As the super-ancients began preparing a series of trials to test the intelligent races that would eventually evolve, their final challenge was the prevention of the Omega Event by navigating the Supreme Labyrinth and releasing a quantum pulse. During the construction of the Supreme Labyrinth's Chamber of Judgement, the consciousness of one of the super-ancients' was transferred into a colossal gold statue resembling a goldman, which would judge those based on their purity (and not their benevolence/malevolence) whether or not they were worthy to proceed to the Throne of Death.
In the first three undertakings of the Labyrinth by humanity in the ancient past, the ones who had earned the title of King of Kings each managed to enter the Labyrinth unchallenged, allowing them to bypass the path that would have led them to be judged by the gold colossus.
The One Impossible Labyrinth[]
As the Throne of Life had been destroyed, all of the rivalling parties rushed to navigate the second half of the Supreme Labyrinth, eventually leading them to the Chamber of Judgement. When General Garthon Rastor entered the Chamber, the gold colossus judged that his intentions were pure despite his desire to allow the Omega Event occur, and allowed him to proceed to Stadium of the Throne of Death. Hardin "Sphinx" Lancaster soon followed, and the colossus judged that his intentions were pure as well despite his desire to subjugate humanity and sent him on his way.
When Jack West Jr rose through the Chamber of Judgement and saw the gigantic statue resembling a gold guardian, he avoided looking into its face out of concern that he would end up like the others who had looked into the faces of the goldmen. Suddenly, the colossus began probing both Jack and Cardinal Ricardo Mendoza's minds individually to determine if they were worthy enough to proceed. As it asked who they were, Mendoza tried to conceal his thoughts from the colossus, however the ancient consciousness quickly saw the truth in that he was a deceitful man, telling him he was unworthy and would now die. Jack was unaware the voice in his head was addressing Mendoza, but quickly realised the truth when he saw Mendoza convulsing beside him in pain as the colossus assaulted his mind, quickly killing the Cardinal as his eyes exploded and ears bled profusely.
The consciousness within the gold statue then addressed Jack, assuring him that he could look upon its face before explaining why it had found Mendoza unworthy. When Jack asked if his own intention was pure, the colossus confirmed that it was, showing Jack images of his own life before the colossus in turn questioned why he had never used the power he had had and what it was he wanted. After Jack answered honestly about his desire to let people live their own lives, he asked about the intentions of Rastor and Sphinx and how they could be seen as pure. In response, the colossus answered that it was only based on the purity of their intentions, not their malevolence, that it had judged them. The gold colossus then briefly answered Jack's questions about what it was and what the trials of the ancients were about, ending the discussion by noting that it was all about being a test of worth before sending Jack on his way.
Soon after, Zoe Kissane-West, Lily West and Alby Calvin each passed through the Chamber of Judgement, and the gold colossus judged the three of them to also be pure, determining that Zoe was pure loyalty, Alby was pure courage, and that Lily was pure love - in addition to being a "most holy and wise Oracle" - before allowing them to proceed.
As Jack sat on the Throne of Death and released the quantum pulse that kept the Omega Event from collapsing the universe, the voice of the gold colossus spoke to him once more, telling him that "Life is rule. Death is life." When Jack questioned if he was dead, the colossus informed him that he was being reborn, as himself but also something different, and that all would obey him as the pulse ended.
Jack would quickly realise the meaning of the colossus's last words, as he discovered had had the ability to command anyone without question, and after reuniting with Zoe, Lily and Alby, he asked what the colossus had said to each of them.
Skills[]
- Telepathic Communication: The gold colossus had the ability to probe and read the minds of any being who comes into the Chamber of Judgement, so that it can determine their purity. This ability is not technically communicated by language, and the colossus itself noted that it was not speaking to Jack in English, but rather that the human was only interpreting the mental messages the ancient consciousness was sending him as a form of language. The colossus can also extend its "voice" to whomever is sitting on the Throne of Death during the quantum pulse.
- Lie Detection: Being able to easily access the minds of those who enter its chamber, the gold colossus can easily see the truth in the minds of the humans it encounters. Despite Mendoza's attempts to hide his true thoughts, the colossus saw through the lies in the Cardinal's head, which allowed it to determine that he was impure.
- Telepathic Assault: Upon judging Mendoza to have impure intentions, the colossus was able to use its telepathic connection to the Cardinal to attack his mind, causing a physical response that greatly pained Mendoza until his eyes exploded and ears began bleeding, killing him.
