Chloe Carnarvon is Iolanthe's former assistant in her role as Royal Keeper of Records and a member of Sphinx's entourage.
History[]
Early History[]
Under unknown circumstances, Chloe Carnarvon came into the services of the Kingdom of Land of the Four Legendary Kingdoms, taking on the role of assistant to the Keeper of Royal Records, Iolanthe Compton-Jones. Chloe proved herself very capable in the role due to her cleverness, and as such knew much of what Iolanthe did involving such as the Omega Event, the Three Secret Cities and the Super-Ancient Beings.
However, finding Iolanthe to be a "spoilt little rich girl", Chloe soon became ambitious, desiring to to rise through the ranks of the Four Kingdoms. One such move was beginning an affair with the King of Land, Iolanthe's brother Orlando, in the hopes of having him agree to marry her. But when she did eventually ask Orlando to make her his wife, he simply laughed at the suggestion.
Feeling scorned by this, Chloe later agreed to work for his cousin Hardin "Sphinx" Lancaster, who planned to use his knowledge to take control of the Four Kingdoms' if the opportunity arose. In order to keep up appearances with Orlando, Chloe continued the affair with him, apparently unaware that Iolanthe had figured out about it.
The Four Legendary Kingdoms[]
Chloe accompanied Iolanthe and Orlando to the Underworld to bear witness to the fourth Great Games of the Hydra, as part of the third trial of the Super-Ancients.
When the Oracle of Siwa Lily West was pulled from the hostage train by Hades and put under Iolanthe's care, Iolanthe asked Chloe to assist her in with the young woman's hair and clothing to make Lily more presentable to the gathered royals.
When the minotaurs began turning against the Four Kingdoms following the completion of the Great Games, Chloe was apparently among Orlando's entourage as they managed to escape the carnage.
The Three Secret Cities[]
After leaving the underworld, Chloe opted to provide Orlando with all the knowledge she had gleaned on the Trial of the Cities during her time assisting Iolanthe, who had instead decided to join forces with Jack West Jr.
Chloe joined Orlando, Ricardo Mendoza and Sunny Malik in heading to the Hall of Royal Records to gather any information that Iolanthe might have kept there. After retrieving a few documents, Chloe and the others departed, unknowingly observed by Mae Merriweather, Zoe West and Julius Adamson.
Orlando, Chloe and Mendoza soon arrived at Thule, and after being greeted by Sir Bjorn, they made their way the antechamber where the diamond altar the trial was initiated at awaited. Unaware that Orlando was prematurely initiating the defences of all the Cities, Chloe watched with lustful admiration as the King of Land implanted the Sword of the Rock in the altar and opened Thule's Great Avenue. After Mendoza guided their way through the booby-trapped triple archways, the group arrived at Thule's entrance, and Chloe was stunned at the sight of the ancient city. With that, Orlando and Chloe left Mendoza and his Swiss Guards to empower the Sword and head to the next City.
As they flew over the Atlantic towards Ra, Orlando and Chloe had sex multiple times in a premature celebration of the trial's completion. After a brief respite where Orlando had a conference call with the other active Kings (Xi and Caldwell), Chloe inquired if he had received good news. Orlando had been pleased to learn that Jack had been imprisonment at the Royal Prison of Erebus, and was confident that Chloe would empower the Helmet of Hades. Claiming that Orlando would soon be the world's ruler as he deserved, Chloe offered herself to the King of Land again as the flight continued.
Upon arriving at Ra's entrance with a squad of Brazilian species forces troops and being allowed into the City by Sir Inigo Defenestra, Chloe made their way into the City with the Helmet. Unfortunately, due to Orlando's actions, they found interference in the City's bronze guardians, but managed to get past them and reach the cupola bridge. However, they soon found their way barred by a set of silvermen preventing them from gaining access to the vault. For two days Chloe sent several of her troops to try and take out the silvermen, but nothing they did had any effect on the automatons.
Chloe was surprised when Iolanthe suddenly appeared nearby, and did nothing to protest as her former employer took the Helmet from her and tossed it to Nobody, who upon donning it became invisible to the bronzemen. Chloe watched as Iolanthe proceeded on to Ra's vault, where she claimed the blue gem from the vault's diamond altar. However, upon returning to the bridge, Iolanthe was forced to hand the Helmet over to Chloe as her former assistant revealed a video from Sphinx displaying Lily's life in peril. With the trial at Ra completed, Chloe and the remains of her retinue quickly fled the infamous golden city with the Weapon.
With the Trial almost completed, Chloe used a supersonic military jet to speed her way to the Altar of the Cosmos within the Rock of Gibraltar, where Sphinx, Orlando and the new Kings waited to perform the sacrificial ritual. After she and Mendoza arrived, they gave their respective Weapons to Sphinx. As Orlando gloated about restoring order to the Four Kingdoms, Sphinx stabbed him with the Sword, the moment for his coup having finally come, and Chloe did nothing as Mendoza killed Caldwell and Xi and Jaeger Eins took out the Kings' guards.
Though the mortally wounded Orlando cried out for Chloe and Mendoza to help him, his former lover barely even looked at the man who had nearly doomed them all with his many mistakes. As Sphinx revealed that Chloe and Mendoza had long been in his employ, Chloe stated it was because he had laughed at her when she had requested he marry her. With that, Chloe watched as Sphinx proceeded to complete the Trial by stabbing Lily in the heart with the Sword, filming the entire ceremony with a video camera. With the Oracle's death, the Trial of the Cities was successfully completed, and soon after Sphinx, Chloe and the rest of the entourage left the Altar to prepare for the final trial.
The Two Lost Mountains[]
As Sphinx successfully performed the ritual by killing Alexander with the Sword of the Rock, Chloe filmed the event in awe as a crimson light revealed writing in the Word of Thoth related to the Trial of the Mountains and a hidden panel opened and revealed the five Rings of Command, which Chloe knew could control the armies of bronzemen. When Sphinx announced that he wanted to obtain the Siren bells, Chloe pointed out that they were notoriously dangerous, but yielded to Sphinx's determination.
Over the next few weeks after the ceremony, Chloe assisted Sphinx as the Trismagi and his entourage began consolidating his newly-acquired resources from the Four Kingdoms and prepared for the Trial of the Mountains.
When Sphinx arrived at the first iron mountain at Mont Saint-Michel to perform the Fall, Chloe was among those who accompanied him into the Hall of the Falling Temple. After watching Sphinx successfully undertake the Fall, Chloe clapped vigorously in congratulations. After Sphinx deduced Jack's presence and called him out, Chloe looked coldly at Iolanthe as she also appeared. As her former boss exchanged words with Sphinx, Iolanthe asked if Chloe had questioned her choices since betraying Orlando; Chloe snorted that she had since she believed working for Iolanthe had held her back and that she was currently standing with Sphinx that she made made the right choice. Chloe then departed with Sphinx and Mendoza as the bronzemen were sent after Iolanthe and Jack.
Soon, Chloe was accompanying Sphinx as he arrived at the Supreme Labyrinth, noting how the plague-ridden bodies of the monasteries built over the gates had kept intruders away for years. Once Sphinx and his labyrinth team were ready to head inside the ancient maze, Sphinx tasked Chloe with finding the Orphean bell as part of his plan to choose who to awaken from the siren sleep, and Chloe bowed as she promised to do so.
The One Impossible Labyrinth[]
After being assigned her task of locating the blue bell, Chloe headed to Salzburg to assist with the Storm Cellar Protocol the Four Kingdoms were undergoing to wait out the period around the Omega Event. While en-route, Chloe sent one of the Knights of the Golden Eight to investigate the vault at Lake Albano where the Church kept notes on the bell's potential location.
When the Knight arrived at the vault, he video-called Chloe, who watched through the Knight's camera-phone as he scanned the room in search for the notes they sought. After directing the Knight to a scroll situated in the middle of the vault, Chloe read from it and learned that the location of the Orphean bell was inscribed on the crown that had belonged to the ancient royal banker Priam. Recalling that the crown had been kept at the Land Kingdom's hunting estate in Wales, Chloe ordered the Knight to bring her the scroll for further examination while she had associates at the Hall of Royal Records to look into the crown.
Chloe soon recalled reading about a fire that had destroyed many of the treasures kept at the hunting estate, and her people at the Hall of Records discovered that Priam's crown had been among the losses. Knowing that there was a copy of the crown in the form of a statue contained within the Vault of Troy at the Zampieri family's estate on Tenedos Island. Chloe thus sent some of her people to examine the statue on her behalf, and though them learned that the Orphean bell resided within one of the two Heliopolitan obelisks known as Cleopatra's Needle, and quickly determined that the bell was within the London obelisk.
Following this, Chloe had her people at Tenedos rig up the vault with explosives in the event that Iolanthe arrived there in search of the bell's location. Indeed, Iolanthe, Nobody and Bertie de Montreuil arrived at the Vault of Troy to examine the statue of Priam's crown, to which Chloe was alerted and spoke to them through hidden speakers; she taunted Iolanthe that reading the Hall of Records' documents while she had been busy concerning herself at various parties had aided her greatly, adding that the answer was in London before having the explosives set off. Chloe's spotter watching the vault reported in a minute later to confirm that the explosion had gone off. While she was unable to leave Salzburg immediately due to issues regarding the kidnapping of Sir John Marren, Chloe believed that she had no need to rush to acquire the bell, and resolved to head to London the following day.
However, after arriving in London and searching the London Needle, Chloe realised that she had been wrong and that it was the obelisk in New York that contained the blue bell, and so she and her forces rushed off to New York.
Taking control of a pair of gunship helicopters, Chloe and her reinforcements flew on to Central Park, where they found that the still-alive Iolanthe and Nobody had just recovered the Orphean bell. Calling out from the chopper's speaker to comment on Iolanthe's resilience, Chloe warned that she had nowhere left to run and would be taking the bell from her. Chloe's gunships proceeded to chase Iolanthe and Nobody's chopper through the streets of New York, however, due to Nobody's superior familiarity with the streets, was able to lead their pursuers towards the Brooklyn Bridge. Before Chloe or her forces knew it, they crashed into the bridge's cables, their gunships exploding and killing those on them, including Chloe. As she looked at the fiery wreckage, Iolanthe quietly remarked that Chloe had picked the wrong team.
