Brother Dagobert 'Bertie' de Montreuil is a Jesuit scholar, the former mentor to Iolanthe Compton-Jones, and an ally to Jack West Jr and his team.

History[]

Early History[]

Born around the mid-1930s, Dagobert 'Bertie' de Montreuil grew up with a craving for knowledge, and at some point chose to join the Catholic Church's Society of Jesus, taking vows of chastity and obedience to the Church. Though the Jesuit life was strict, Bertie enjoyed being among them, as they too prized learning and knowledge.

During his time with the Jesuits and the Church, Bertie came to learn about the Four Legendary Kingdoms who secretly ruled the world from the shadows, the Super-Ancient Beings and their trials leading up to the end of the universe, the Omega Event. Additionally, Bertie discovered the location of the first iron mountain on Mont Saint-Michel, that the locations of some of the other mountains were contained within Javier/Francis Xavier's journal, and other things regarding the Trial of the Mountains. such as the nature of the Fall.

Over the course of his time with the Church, Bertie heard whispers from elderly priests who - in their delirious final moments - spoke of a secret vault located at Castel Gandolfo which contained various valuables and embarrassing materials that the Church did not want people knowing about.

At some stage, Bertie met the young royals Hardin "Sphinx" Lancaster, Orlando Compton-Jones and Iolanthe Compton-Jones, and quickly came to dislike the boys due to their entitled personalities, like the older members of the Four Kingdoms Bertie met. With Iolanthe, however, Bertie found that despite her similar willfulness and insolence, the young princess was both brilliant and talented, quickly becoming his best student. When Iolanthe was 19, Bertie was tasked with mentoring her further, becoming a surrogate father figure to her and giving her the nickname Io after Jupiter's fourth moon.

Bertie also took on Felix Rasmussen as his protégé, however he chose not to share everything he knew with Rasmussen after recognising his blatant desire to move up in the Church's ranks. In addition, Bertie's increasing age and lack of skills in office politics meant that his advice was often ignored, such as his suggestion to put the Javier journal in the Secret Archives' Vault XXII, though the Church thought they knew better and stored in Vault IX. Eventually, after Rasmussen outright replaced Bertie, the old Jesuit chose to take up a position as an adjunct scholar at the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope in Arizona.

In late 2016, after the Great Games of the Hydra, Bertie was amused to learn of Jack West Jr's upsetting of the Four Kingdoms' world order, becoming a self-proclaimed fan of the Fifth Warrior's endeavors.

The Two Lost Mountains[]

At some point before the Trial of the Mountains began, Bertie was ordered by Rasmussen to assist in preparing the iron mountain at Mont Saint-Michel for the arrival of Sphinx, who had recently enacted a coup d'état against the Four Kingdoms and taken control of their assets so that he could become the world's new ruler.

On December 25th, Bertie was at the Mont when he received an encrypted message from Iolanthe, who was with the Fifth Warrior and asking for his help in order to stop Sphinx and locate the iron mountains using the Vatican globe. Eager to help her and Jack, Bertie suggested that they meet at the Mont and for her to use the Tombelaine Island tunnel, while also warning her that Sphinx was en-route to the first mountain.

After making an excuse to Rasmussen to slip away, Bertie arrived at the undersea tunnel entrance, warning Jack and Iolanthe of a laser tripwire when they arrived. Upon greeting them - making note of the state Iolanthe was in following Orlando's torture of her, and sharing his thoughts on Sphinx's history - he led the pair to a balcony overlooking the Hall of the Falling Temple, explaining the nature of the Fall and how the Vatican globe had been defaced. As he prepared to return to Rasmussen, Bertie told Iolanthe that he was proud of her and that Jack had likely been a good influence.

Rejoining Rasmussen moments before Sphinx and his entourage arrived, Bertie proceeded to watch as the upstart Trismagi performed the Fall, after which Sphinx decided to have Bertie, Rasmussen and the other monks killed to keep them from sharing what they had seen with others. Following a brief respite in which Sphinx had Hades executed by a silverman and called out the watching Jack, the bronzemen began turning on the monks. At Iolanthe's urging, Jack used a maghook to swing over to the Hall of the Falling Temple and grab Bertie before the automatons could get him, then proceeded to flee through the undersea tunnel, where the Jesuit was impressed by Jack's use of greystone to seal the pursuing bronzemen.

Bertie was soon forced to tag along as the Jack led a mission to rescue Easton from Yago DeSaxe on the latter's plane. As Jack and the others were about to set off to the second iron mountain, Bertie asked how the plane he was going to remain on was going to land, and though he was reassured Alby Calvin had remote control, Jack questioned if Bertie would rather join him in the upcoming firefight, to which the Jesuit could only stammer in response.

Afterwards, as the team reunited outside Dijon and began discussing plans to find one of the two lost mountains, when Iolanthe asked if he'd known the Church had kept the lost uraeus of the Great Sphinx of Giza in the Archives, Bertie admitted he'd only heard rumours, and briefly spoke up to note both the Islamic and Jewish faiths had been fighting over the Temple Mount for centuries. Following a brief side-discussion with Iolanthe, Bertie told Jack that he suspected, based on a lead Zoe had uncovered in Rome regarding the Orphean bell's location, that he might understand the meaning of Albano's Emissary and asked to investigate further back in Italy. Jack agreed, and asked Iolanthe and Nobody to accompany the Jesuit as he made his investigation.

The One Impossible Labyrinth[]

Having pieced together that the Albano's emissary mentioned in the note Zoe uncovered in the Pope's office with an ancient Roman ruin at Lake Albano and the whispers of dying priests mentioning a secret vault, Bertie had Nobody fly him and Iolanthe to Castel Gandolfo. As they flew over the Church's estate, Bertie gave a brief overview of its history before telling his comrades that they would find Albano's Emissary at the Lake. Explaining that the emissary was in fact not a person, but a type of outlet made by the Romans to control the water levels in Lake Albano, as well as his reasoning which had brought them there, Bertie led Iolanthe and Nobody into the ruin, where they found the entrance to the rumoured vault.

Once inside the vault, Bertie and the others started searching for the notes on the Orphean bell, with Bertie himself finding a pair of scrolls on the blue bell. Reading them, Bertie learned of a clue from the second scroll that relayed that there was an the inscription on the crown that had once belonged to Priam. Though Iolanthe revealed that Priam's crown had been destroyed in a fire, she also informed them that there was a statue of Priam and his crown kept at Tenedos Island, which Bertie believed could help them. After taking cover in Khufu's sarcophagus to avoid detection from a Knight of the Golden Eight when they arrived at the vault on Chloe Carnarvon's behalf, Bertie, Iolanthe and Nobody hurried to try to get to Tenedos first.

After they landed on Tenedos Island and infiltrated the vault of Troy to view the inscription on the statue's crown, Bertie and the others soon found the giant statue of Priam they sought. Before they could examine it, however, Chloe spoke to them through hidden speakers in the vault; taunting that her people had already come and gone and that the answer they'd sought about the Orphean bell's location lay in London before having the explosives set off. Fortunately, Nobody spotted the explosives and managed to get his finger on the detonation switch to keep them from detonating, but could not let go without the semtex exploding.

Though Nobody was prepared to sacrifice himself, Bertie resolved to take his place, telling Iolanthe that he was old and his life was almost over anyway, and that he thought she and Nobody were a good couple and didn't want their time together cut short. Despite Iolanthe's attempt to protest, Bertie put his own finger on the switch and ordered Iolanthe to quickly examine the inscription on the statue of Priam's crown. As she read out the inscription, Iolanthe and Bertie determined that the Orphean bell was actually in New York's Heliopolis Needle, and then Bertie implored for Iolanthe and Nobody to flee, sharing a quick-yet-emotional farewell with his former student. Seconds after Iolanthe and Nobody fled through a hidden passage, Bertie released his finger and set off the semtex, causing a huge explosion that instantly killed the old Jesuit.

As she and Nobody flew to New York to find the Orphean bell, Iolanthe spent some time trying to come to terms with Bertie's sacrifice.
